What's the advantage?
With sevoflurane, animals wake up much more rapidly after being placed under gas or general anesthesia. For senior pets or pets with other diseases, such as liver, kidney, or heart disease, sevoflurane anesthesia may offer a safer alternative. The rapid recovery after sevoflurane anesthesia means that after surgical procedures where your dog used to need to remain overnight due to grogginess after a procedure may be a thing of the past. With sevoflurane, your pet may be awake enough to safely go home. For many dogs in wheelchairs, sevoflurane is used for MRI that is performed to diagnose intervertebral disc disease due disc prolapse. In animals with neurological problems, sevoflurane may offer the safest alternative to anesthesia. If you are worried about your senior or handicapped pet undergoing general anesthesia, ask your vet whether sevoflurane is used in their practice.
